The above photo was taken at Senator Pan’s Office on Thursday, October 19 where Sacramento City College was recognized for its outstanding contributions to the State of California’s workforce efforts through the Strong Workforce Stars Program. Senator Pan is shown presenting the Senate Resolution to President Gutierrez. Also shown in the picture are Sue Hussey, Deputy Sector Navigator for Health, Donnetta Webb, Dean of Advanced Technology; Phil Cypret, Aeronautics Professor; Jennifer Siu, Professor, 2nd Semester Nursing; and second semester nursing students.
The Associate Degree Nursing Program earned Strong Workforce Stars recognition in the Health Sector for having 74% of student participants attain the regional living wage upon graduation. Sacramento City College’s health programs are successful because of their long term strong reputation, which gives completers a significant advantage in obtaining in field employment upon graduation. An active Community Advisory Board constantly engages the community and the health industry in keeping the program relevant and up to date on labor-market needs. High quality faculty are equipped with extensive clinical experience and practice pedagogical innovation. These factors contribute to a higher than average board-passing rate of 95%. This strong commitment to the students and their attunement to health industry needs creates great symbiosis and success.

The Grow Manufacturing Initiative (GMI) comes to Sacramento. On October 31, forty seven local Sacramento area manufacturing leaders convened to hear a presentation from Bill Gaines and his team about how they developed and continue to successfully run the Grow Manufacturing Initiative in the Chico area. The audience was treated to the mechanics of how local Chico area manufactures have engaged with their local high school, community college and Chico State to develop a sustainable workforce pipeline. Additionally, they learned about how developing a common voice as manufacturers will assist them with local and statewide government issues, and getting to know the abilities of each local manufacturer would benefit the bottom line and the local economy. The Sacramento area manufacturing leaders agreed to meet again early in 2018 to begin to formalize something similar to the Chico area GMI.
